30 take the 'Plunge'

HAMMONDSPORT-On Saturday March 26, hundreds watched 30 people jump into Keuka Lake, participating in the annual Polar Bear Plunge.  The event was held at The Switzerland Inn restaurant and while people were prepared for cold temperatures, rarely is snow visible on the hills during this event.    The high temperature for the day was 31 degrees with a windchill around 11.  This is 10-15 degrees below normal for this time in March.  The reported water temperature was 34 degrees and this year marked the 22nd time this once a year event has occurred.  Home towns of the jumpers ranged from Penn Yan, New York to Baltimore, Maryland and many places in between.  While there were jumpers both young and old, one of the first to take the plunge shared that this was his 18th time participating at the age of 75.  Other jumpers commemorated the event by wearing costumes of movie characters or super-heros.
