Agritourism conferences coming to Watkins

WATKINS GLEN—Noted agritourism marketing expert Jane Eckert will be the moderator for an Agritourism Conference and Workshop slated to be held at the Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel April 7, 2009. As a growing trend, the conference will expand upon agritourism efforts started in the region within the last few years. These efforts are intended to give local farm, winery and vineyard owners the tools needed to become an agritourism destination or to improve upon existing strategies.
Eckert is an award winning marketing professional with over 25 years experience. Her presentations have helped numerous farm businesses learn how to turn their operations into retail ventures that can attract visitors and benefit from direct sales to these customers. Agritourism has been shown to be one of the fastest growing segments of the travel industry and rural communities all over the country are discovering ways to tap into this trend.
The conference is being presented as a collaborative effort between the Schuyler County Partnership for Economic Development, the Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce and Cornell Cooperative Extension. In addition to the partner organizations, funding to sponsor this event was also provided by Corning Inc., Cargill, Chemung Canal Trust Company, Finger Lakes Wine Country and the Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel.
Anyone interested in learning more about agritourism or marketing their farm-related business is encouraged to contact the Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce at 607-535-4300 to make a reservation. The workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The workshop is free. Lunch will be available for $15.
