Airport work begins this week

PENN YAN--The Penn Yan-Yates County Airport will see work begin on a new eight aircraft hangar this week. The hangar work will also include a 5,000 square-yard taxi lane extension. Estimates indicate the project will take four months to complete, putting the end date around the middle of January.
The hangar will be a pre-engineered metal aircraft T-hangar building erected on a concrete floor supported by concrete pier foundations. The hangar will be for smaller aircraft around a 30-foot wingspan or less. The new hangar and taxi lane extension will have access off of Airport Drive, which is off of Bath Road. Bids for the project were received in February, with Chrisanntha Construction getting the winning bid for $808,454. The Yates County Legislature has gotten financial assistance for the project as well, receiving $480,000 from the state and $445,000 from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Airport Engineer Bryan Savage with Passero Associates had previously said this work is part of the airport's "five-year immediate future" plan. He mentioned the hangar work is due to a need for more housing from general aviation customers, providing more rent space for more aircraft.
