April rainfall is Yates' second highest

YATES COUNTY—April 2011 had the second highest amount of rainfall in history for Yates County, comparing the same month as far back as 1898.
Jessica Rennells, climatologist for the Northeast Regional Climate Center at Cornell University, said there was 5.76 inches of rainfall in Yates County this April. She said the most rainfall in April was 6 inches, in 1901.
Rennells added Yates’s rainfall in April over the last few years has not topped two inches. In April 2010, there was only 1.87 inches of rainfall. The 2009 total was 1.26 inches. In 2008, it rained 1.8 inches in April. According to Rennells, the average April rainfall is 2.52 inches for Yates County.
“It’s a record breaking April,” said Rennells about this year. She added the rain is forecasted to continue into May.
“It looks like the next two weeks will have above normal precipitation,” she said. However, Rennells said the climate center expects the last half of May to be drier.
