Auxiliary brings solider home for a surprise

DUNDEE—Robert Pierce, a soldier from Dundee, surprised his family with a secret visit thanks to the Dundee American Ladies Auxiliary during the seventh annual tree lighting ceremony, Friday, Dec. 9.
Pierce arrived with Santa and Mrs. Claus, much to the surprise of his parents Lenny and Debbie Pierce.  Auxiliary President Karen Maynard explained Pierce has been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, and hasn’t been back home to Dundee in three years. She added he has a wife and three children.
“She was totally surprised,” said Maynard about Pierce’s mother.
The evening was also a tribute to Army Spec. Chris Scott, another Dundee service member who was killed in September of this year while overseas.
The ladies’ auxiliary pulled off a similar surprise in 2009, when Shannon Gottschall was brought home to surprise his mother. Gottschall had been serving at an air base in Georgia and had only been back to Dundee twice that year.
