Benton fire chief resigns after texting charge

BENTON—Benton Volunteer Fire Department Chief Matthew Perry has stepped down as of April 11. According to a press release from the Yates County Sheriff’s Department, Perry was arrested April 10 for allegedly sending text messages of a sexual nature (or “sexting”) to a 16-year-old girl in Yates County.
A press release from the Benton Fire Department said Perry voluntarily stepped down after the Yates County Sheriff’s Department arrested him.  Sheriff Ron Spike said the teenager’s parents issued a complaint, April 1.  The official incident report from the Sheriff’s office states Perry was issued an appearance ticket for the Village of Penn Yan Court Monday, April 13.
At court, Monday afternoon, Justice Danny Hibbard issued a ‘stay away order’ to the former fire chief.  Perry was ordered to appear again in court May 4 on the charges.
