Casella transfer station will close

MILO—The Casella recycling transfer station on Milo Mills Road in Penn Yan is closing for the winter.
Yates County Legislative Clerk Connie Hayes said she received a call about the closing from the parent company, Casella. She explained she was told it is closing Oct. 16, and will stay closed throughout the winter.
Hayes added Casella’s plan is to open again in the spring, but she was given no date. She said the reason Casella gave her for the close, is the transfer station is not making enough money to stay open.
The Casella transfer station increased the cost of dropping off recycling Feb. 1, 2009. The price was $4.25 for a bag, and increased to an additional $1 per axle to drive onto the property.
Following the 2009 increase, Robert Multer, Yates County legislator, made a statement in the March 2009 meeting. He said the legislature contacted Casella’s Division Manager, Ray Bell, saying many residents are already struggling to make ends meet.
When asked Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, he said the problem now is residents without a pickup service will have one less place to take recycling. He pointed out that the transfer station in Dundee is still open.
Bell did not return phone calls by press time.
