Ceremonies recognize athletes

Dundee celebrates success of student athletes
The Dundee Central School District's annual sports awards ceremony was held Thursday, June 4, in the school gymnasium, honoring the achievements of its student athletes throughout the year. Nolleen Whetham and Megan Howell were named the co-winners of the Dundee Female Athlete Award during the evening, while Jonathan Huber was named the top male athlete by winning the David Summerson Male Athlete Award.
The Keith Cagle Award for football and baseball went to Justin Neu, who was also recognized for having the record for most stolen bases in Section V with 118. Jeffrey Wood was named the recipient of the Dale Howell Award for football, while Bradley Smith received the Ray Fultz Award, also for football.
Andrew Clark was recognized for his basketball prowess this past season by earning the Richard Kendall Award. The district also recognized Tyler Kelly and Howell for setting school records for most completed three-pointers in a game. Kelly set the boys record with eight baskets, while Howell set the girls record with six baskets.
In wrestling, Patrick Sipley was honored with the Skorusa Award, while both Lance Irwin and Robert Petro were recognized with the Half-Century Award for amassing 84 and 55 wins respectively.
Whetham took home the Bolvig Female Award for track, while Cody Salvatore received the Bolvig Male Award. Salvatore was also honored for setting the school record in the triple long jump (45' 1"), while Geordan Conyers was recognized for his record in the long jump (21' 1.5").
The district's Most Valuable Players in each sport were Jessica Prior (girls track), Kayla Marusarz (winter cheerleading), Howell (girl's basketball and girls soccer), Emily End (fall cheerleading), Whetham (girls soccer), Justin Neu (baseball), Tiffany Simmons (girls bowling), Olivia Taylor (softball and volleyball), Ryan Goodman (boys bowling), Brennan Krall (football and wrestling), Jarrett Butler (boys basketball) and Huber (boys track).

Penn Yan holds 49th annual awards program
Penn Yan Academy held the 49th annual sports awards program, Monday, June 8. Teams presented Varsity Club/Girls Athletic Association Awards along with Heart Awards. There were also individual awards which included: Matt Harer Memorial Sportsmanship Award, Matt Scutt; Shirley Trombley Spirit Award, Courtney Lafler; Stork Insurance Agency Sportsmanship Award, Stephanie Owens; Kyle Hopkins Outstanding Teammate Award, Tyler Bray; Ken Johnson Sports Award, Peter Tomlinson; Fred Marshall, Jr. Legion Award, Jake Covert; U.S. Army Scholar Athlete Award, Stephanie Owens and Bryce Dinehart; U.S. Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award, Stephanie Owens and Peter Tomlinson; Girls Coaches' Trophy, Courtney Lafler; Boys Coaches' Trophy, Ben Covert.

Watkins Glen honored the work and accomplishments of the spring sport athletes, Tuesday, June 2. Teams named a most valuable player (MVP), most improved (MI) and sportsmanship (S) award winner. Baseball: Justin Kelly, MVP; Sean Kelly, MI; Michael Doane, S. Softball: Katherine Meehan, MVP; Bernadette Osborne, MI; Amanda Cherock, S; Nateah Cornish, Alexis Gonzalez, courage award. Boys Track: Patrick Hazlitt, MVP; Gabe Planty, MI; Jacob Carocci, S. Girls Track: Maggie Bond, MVP; Kali Bond, Liza Carnes, MI; Joelle Slater, S.
