PENN YAN--The interim director of the Yates Chamber of Commerce has unexpectedly left the area.
That was the word from chamber board member and officer Kathy Waye in an email Thursday, Nov. 16.
Waye said, "Recently it was brought to our attention there were some irregularities in financial matters. We immediately began an investigation. However, during that process, the interim director [Julie Coleman] departed the area unexpectedly. The investigation is ongoing and we are working with the proper authorities."
Tuesday, Nov. 21, Sheriff Ron Spike released the following statement: "The Yates County Sheriff's Office is investigating the misappropriation of funds belonging to the Yates County Chamber of Commerce since being notified Nov. 14 by the chamber board of directors. Investigators await official bank records at this time as the matter continues to be investigated. Any amounts in excess of $1,000 would be considered a felony. Investigation continues with unnamed persons of interest at this time."
Coleman was appointed interim director after the sudden passing of longtime former chamber President and CEO Michael Linehan in February, 2017.
Waye added, "Rest assured that the chamber staff and board will continue to do their jobs serving the Yates County community."
Waye said the chamber board is in the final stages of selecting a permanent president and chief executive officer.
