Chisom named Deputy Sheriff of the Year

PENN YAN- Derek Chisom was recognized as the Deputy Sheriff of the Year by the Yates County Legislature at their meeting Monday, April 10.
Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike said Chisom led the agency in arrests last year and was number two in traffic enforcement. "We are very proud of the work of this individual," he said.
The sheriff also introduced a group of responders who had saved a person's life during an incident on March 27 in Branchport at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Each received a certificate of commendation.
Spike spoke of the "group synergy" that allowed the work of many to contribute to their success. He said, "This event brought several people together to save a life. It is important that we recognize them."
He recognized the following people: Lisa Williams, the 911 dispatcher who handled the emergency, Trooper Jeffrey Mast, Yates County deputy sheriff Bradley Cole, and first responders Jon Hunt, Art Hunt and Matthew Kelly.
In other business, the legislature enthusiastically voted to support a partial repeal of the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement (SAFE) Act of 2013 and limit its application to the counties of Kings, Queens, Richmond, New York and the Bronx.
A partial repeal occurs when a specified part or provision of a law is repealed but other provisions remain in force. In this case, legislators voted to apply the safe Act only to the downstate boroughs. A regional public consensus has been growing around the idea that the needs of New York City and its surrounds are different from the needs of rural areas like Yates County.
The legislature appointed Dan Long as the county planner. The position had been vacant for over a year.
The quarterly report on Southern Tier Broadband was presented. Details of the report occurred in closed session.
