PENN YAN--The Pennsylvania Yankee Theatre Company (PYTCo) Youth Theatre will be hosting a production of Disney's "My Son Pinocchio Jr." this weekend. There will be three performances, all taking place Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 30, 31 and Aug. 1. Each show begins at 7:30 p.m. and will be held at the Penn Yan Academy auditorium.
The production is directed by Grace Knapton and features a cast of some 74 children. Knapton said the cast has been preparing for the show for the past two weeks, adding they are being helped by some area high school and college students as well. The role of Pinocchio will be played by Joseph Droney, while the role of Geppetto will be played by Paul Gaston.
The PYTCo Youth Experience is a summer theater day camp where children experience all aspects of the theater process. The day camp involves many students from the third through 11th grades and culminates in a summer production.
"My Son Pinocchio Jr." is based on the book by David I. Stern and features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. The songs "When You Wish Upon A Star" and "I've Got No Strings" are by Leigh Harline and Ned Washington. The plot features Geppetto as he journeys to find the meaning of family. When a fairy grants his wish to bring his puppet to life, the new father learns the difficulty of being a parent. It is only when faced with the thought of never seeing Pinocchio again that Geppetto learns the joys of being a father.
Tickets will be $6 at the door.
