County approves college commons plan

YATES COUNTY--Following the denial of the Keuka Commons site plan review at last month's meeting, the Yates County planning board approved the plan Thursday, Sept. 24. This comes based on the fact that Yates County Soil and Water signed off on the project, whereas their comment was not included with the plan during the August meeting.
Keuka Commons is for a two-story, roughly 28,000 square foot building at the corner of Central and Assembly Avenues on the Keuka College campus. This complex will include retail space, the college bookstore, office space, a café and a fitness center. The total estimated cost of the project is $5.4 million.
Some residents and officials spoke against the project at the last meeting, citing concerns with storm water runoff and the increase of impermeable surfaces due to additional parking lot space associated with the project. However, nobody spoke for or against the project atThursday's meeting. With the comments from soil and water included with the site plan, many planning board members felt more comfortable with approving the review, which they did so unanimously.
In other business:
• The board approved an area variance requested by Art and Brianne Kirk for their property along Bath Road in Milo. The request was for a three-foot height variance due to topography challenges in building a single unit dwelling with an attached garage.
• Josef Brodmann of 225 Main St. in Penn Yan had a request for an area variance approved to replace the existing concrete sidewalk with an asphalt driveway.
