County wants apartments at Center

MONTOUR FALLS—After Restore New York funding has helped Watkins Glen and the Montour House, the village of Montour Falls is applying for a grant for the old Rural Urban Center.
Mayor Donna Kelley said while the village is applying for the grant, it will be the county’s project. Bruce Nelson, currently the developer for the Montour House, will also be in charge of this project when it starts. The total amount of funds the village will be requesting is $1.1 million. At the March 2 Montour Falls village board meeting, the estimated project total was stated as $1.6 million. Nelson said that nothing is concrete yet, but the plan is to turn the old school into 11 apartment units. The property may also be eligible for historic preservation.
“The idea is fairly new,” he said, explaining he heard about it a month ago. Nelson explained that the Rural Urban Center is surplus county property and that the county “wants it back on the tax rolls.”
