Current snowfall surpasses last year’s total

YATES, SCHUYLER COUNTIES—After Sunday’s recent snowstorm, the Yates and Schuyler area blew past last year’s total snowfall record by 19 inches.
According to Mitch Gilt, a hydrometeorologist with the National Weather Service in Binghamton, the snowfall for this area is currently 98.7 inches so far.  He added that the last year the total snowfall for the 2009-10 winter was 80.1 inches.
Gilt said this year’s total snowfall is higher than some areas: Hornell currently has 82 inches and Bath has 71 inches.  However, Auburn has accumulated 136.9 inches so far this winter.  He explained that the closer you get to Syracuse the more snowfall there is.
“And we’re still looking at the potential for more snow in March,” Gilt said.
The National Weather Service is even predicting a storm system from the southwest to come through the area Wednesday to Friday.  The NWS added the “wintery mix of precipitation” will be followed by rain.
Sunday’s snow storm dropped between seven and a half inches to 16 inches.  Cayuta in Schuyler County experienced the most snowfall at 16 inches.
