District cuts jobs, awards tenurePENN YAN —Work on the 2010-11 Penn Yan Central School District budget was reflected in action to abolish several positions, effective June 30 at the May 26 meeting of the district board of education.Included were a school psychologist and one of each in tenure areas of special education, science, physical education, English, reading, social studies. Positions included were one full time equivalent. Also included were three elementary teachers and four teaching assistants. Due to retirements, resignations or short-term appointments, termination of services for many of the above positions was not necessary. Physical education teacher Kristopher Wilber will be voluntarily terminated and will receive a probationary appointment as a health teacher. Two elementary teachers and three teaching assistants positions were abolished. Six non-certified staff positions were also abolished: keyboard specialist, three full time clerks and two full time teacher aide positions. Of that list, due to retirements or short term appointments, only a half time clerk position and one teacher aide position will be terminated. One clerk will also be reduced from full time to half time. In other business: Approved creation of a half time English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher, effective Sept. 1. Also approved increase from .8 to FTE for school psychologist. Newly-tenured teachers celebrated with family and friends during the May 26 meeting. Before each person was recognized individually, Superintendent of Schools Ann Orman said, “This is a special night for us. We appreciate all your efforts. Thank you for getting to this milestone.” The recipients and their tenure areas are Mary Christensen, elementary education; Brett Darrow, mathematics; Deanna Gnage, social worker; Warren Kinsey, school district administrator; Meaghan Kise, elementary education; Elizabeth Marino, art; Dan Miller, science; Lindsay Molisani, speech therapist; Katherine Moore, special education; Deb Nielsen, teaching assistant; Rebekah Prine, languages other than English; David Pullen, school district administrator; Stephanie Smolos, elementary education; Kris Wilber, physical education and Stephen Willson, social studies. • Approved memorandum of understanding regarding terms and conditions and employment of the Assistant Superintendent for Business and Associate superintendent other business for Instruction and Staff Development. • Accepted a $2,000 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Grant for the elementary school. • Approved a change order for asbestos removal in the amount $12,995. • Tabled first reading of four proposed policy changes to June 9. All are existing policies and include free and reduced price meals or free milk, reimbursement for meals/refreshments, attendance by board members at conferences, conventions and workshops and student organizations. Policies on compensation and expenses and travel, training, subsistence and incidental expenses were abolished because necessary wording is covered in other existing policies. • Approved the last day for elementary students June 23. The next meeting of the Penn Yan Central School District board of education will be at 7 p.m. June 9 in the elementary school cafeteria. |
