Downtown projects nearing March deadline

PENN YAN--The local committee charged with choosing the downtown projects for the state's $10 million Penn Yan Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) met for the fourth time Tuesday, Feb. 26. The group narrowed their recommendations to 15 projects coming in at $15,205,308 for state grants.
Ed Flynn, the Rochester based LaBella Associate's coordinator for the Penn Yan project, said the state wants Penn Yan to submit a list of recommended projects totaling $15 million. Flynn said then the state will further pare the list down to $9.7 million for the projects that will be completed.
At the meeting Tuesday, the committee decided three projects wouldn't be included on the DRI list but may very well receive other funding in the future for their construction projects. The three removed from the DRI list included: Liberty Lofts, 201 Elm St., $4,000,000 DRI request for an $8,728,000 project to re-develop and re-purpose three properties at the northwest corner at Liberty and Elm Street; 107 Main St., $157,800 DRI request for a $282,000 renovating project and the Barron House, 3 Main St., for a $200,000 DRI request on a $400,000 renovation project. Flynn said in the next few weeks additional information will be checked and added the list can certainly change somewhat for their next meeting in March. Flynn said the list now is advanced but not final.
Flynn commented the local committee will review the final slate of Penn Yan projects at their meeting Wednesday, March 13. Then a final public meeting will be scheduled the week of March 18 to share the list of submitted projects. Flynn said their plan will be submitted to state officials by March 31.
The 15 advanced stage recommended projects and their dollar amounts are listed on the chart to the right.
