Dresden village board 5/4/11

Meeting:  The Dresden village board met Wednesday, May 4, for one hour and 45 minutes.
Attendance:  All board members were present.  There were 17 members of the public in the audience.
Action:  Resident Dick Brown will do grounds work and maintenance on the village entrance.  The board approved him to spend no more than $200 on flowers and other supplies.  He explained he also needs some top soil, which he will mix with some donated compost for the flower bed.
• Clerk Terry Dilts was approved to spend between $300 and $500 on supplies.  She said that would cover most of what she needs over the next year.
• A $600 repair was approved for a Ford truck’s dump box.  Dilts said the bottom has rotted out.
Discussion without action:  The board heard a request to put a sign on Main Street, going into the village, pointing the direction to the Methodist Church.  Mayor Joe Gibson suggested the sign also include the Baptist church, which is also in the village.  No decision was made.
• Highway worker Brian Ellis reported he met with a representative from Genesee/Finger Lakes Regional Planning Council about storm water drainage.  The village has a grant with the council to create a proposal for repairing two storm drains.  He explained if another grant becomes available, the council would apply on behalf of the village with the studies they have done.
• Brown suggested the board ask the state for a new sign on Seneca Street pointing out the lake.  He said there used to be one there, but it was stolen.
• Ellis said the fire department’s siren is going to need to be replaced soon.  He said the village has discussed it, but never did anything.  Ellis added a replacement would cost between $13,000 and $18,000.
• The board also considered replacing the storage buildings at the water tank.  The board discussed adding a lean-to for storage, but had questions about setback requirements.
Appointments/resignations:  The board approved the new fire department's new members: Warren Zimmerman as fire chief, Howard Leach as first assistant, John Stryker as second assistant. and David Parkhurst as third assistant.  Dan Egburtson is captain.
Upcoming meetings:  The next village board meeting will be Thursday, May 26, at 7:30 p.m.  It will be the June board meeting and the year-end close out.
