Dundee changes roofing project construction date

DUNDEE—The Dundee Central School board of education postponed roof work on the district building from this summer to next year, 2013.
Board President Jim Koehler said the change was approved at the Thursday, May 10, school board meeting. Originally, the district planned to replace parts of the roof at the elementary school and district wing this summer. However, over the winter workers discovered cold air was leaking into the building. Business Manager Melissa Lawson said they found openings through interior load bearing walls of the high school attic in April.
Koehler said there isn’t any immediate danger, but the walls will need to be improved next summer with the roof work. He added some parts of the school are open to the attic, letting in cold air and increasing heating costs. Koehler said insulation has shifted over the years or there just wasn’t any insulation at all.
The district hasn’t decided exactly what will be done in the attic, but Koehler said work will improve energy efficiency. This additional work is being planned because extra funds are available from construction bids coming in lower than expected.
The remaining parts of the project are floor and wall coverings, heating and air conditioning, and athletic field improvements. Koehler said the grass that was planted on the football field should be in good condition for the football and soccer teams to play on this fall. Lawson said workers will also be erecting the press box on the bleachers between mid-June to mid-July. She added the track’s new rubber surface will be put in after the spring sports season ends and should be done late this spring or in the early summer.
The next school board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 14, at 7 p.m.
