Dundee Day: More than just a sale

DUNDEE—There are a lot of yard sales during the summer, but few villages in the area have one that brings out the community like in Dundee.
Dundee Day is this Saturday, July 9, all day. People will have the chance to search the village to find deals and hidden treasures from block to block. In addition to the yard sales, people and groups will be selling ice cream, drinks and other foods. This year is also the scheduled return of the bed races.
“You can find a lot of deals,” said Mike Westfall, a Dundee resident who set-up a yard sale for the Fourth of July weekend.
He said he knew a friend who bought a new $600 swimming pool for $70 at a previous Dundee Day. Christina Westfall added it’s a good time to see everyone you know because almost the entire village comes out and participates.
The new event to participate in this year is the bed races. Organizer Debbie Wright explained each entry in the bed race is a group of five people and a bed with wheels installed. Four people push the bed down the street, while the fifth person actually rides the bed. Wright said two beds will compete against each other at a time.
The races will take place on Seneca Street, between the Dollar Store and Grace Street. The start time is 1 p.m. Wright said there will be four or five competitors and there may be more than one race per bed if necessary. The top prize will be for fastest time.
Participant Warren Smith said it’s a good way to get the community to come together. He added it could become a big event in future years if there is enough involvement.
“I wasn’t here when they did (the bed races) before, but it sounded like fun,” said Smith.
