Dundee, Penn Yan schools move remote

YATES COUNTY--As counties across the state continue to deal with increases in COVID-19 cases, Dundee Central School announced Wednesday, Dec. 30, they utilized full remote instruction beginning Monday, Jan. 4. Penn Yan followed suit Tuesday, Jan. 5, transitioning to "distance learning 2.0." At this time, both schools plan their return date for in-person learning on Tuesday, Jan. 19.
"The challenges associated with managing COVID-19 as it relates to public schools has not slowed, in fact, they become even more difficult to manage as the spikes in the infection rate continues," the letter from Superintendent Kelly Houck said. "Due to the recent increases in the infection rate associated with confirmed positive COVID-19 cases in our county and in our region as well as several DCS faculty and staff members being placed under quarantine, the decision has been made to have all DCS students pivot to remote learning..."
In the Yates County Public Health daily COVID update on Monday, Jan. 4, 65 new cases were reported since Dec. 31. There were 107 active cases, six currently hospitalized and 275 cases or contacts in isolation or quarantine. The Yates seven-day average of positive test results is 9.5 percent and the 14-day rate is 7.9.
"If you are sick, even if you think it is just a sinus infection or cold, please stay home from work and do not attend family or social gatherings," the health department said. "Isolate yourself from others in your home and get tested. Please keep your social circle small and limit social gatherings."
Students are able to continue to receive breakfast and lunch from the school. Families who are not already signed up can call the schools to enroll.
