Dundee school board 7/12/12

Meeting:  The Dundee school board met for one hour and 35 minutes on Thursday, July 12.
Attendance:  Jared Webster was the only board member who was absent.  There was one member of the public in the audience.
Action:  The board approved a number of regular appointments and designations at the reorganizational meeting.
Discussion without action:  Parent Ron Jackson asked if the board could look into reinstating the boys soccer program.  He said his son, who is entering the seventh grade next school year, really enjoys playing soccer.  Jackson said he understood interested students could play on Bradford’s soccer team, but he added the required traveling is not feasible.  Board President Jim Koehler said the boys program was cut because there were not enough players last year.  However, Superintendent Kathy Ring said she would speak with Athletic Director Jen Hutches.
    •  Board member Paul Brown pointed out that the recently installed press box at the football field is missing a window on the south side of the structure.  He explained that window is needed to see the scoreboard from within the press box.  He added he checked the architect’s drawings for the box and the window was not included.  The board pointed out a window was part of the original plans.
    •  Ring said the lunch menu will change next school year.  She spoke with Dana Burton, director of food services for Dundee and Penn Yan, about the federally mandated changes.  Ring explained food offerings will be based on the My Plate nutritional guide.  She said the snack bar as it previously existed will be replaced with a sub shop.  Hutches also applied for a grant to purchase vending machines with healthier choices.
    •  The board recognized Maxwell Gorton for being selected to participate in the 30th Annual Eddie Meath Football Game, Saturday, July 7.  Board member Matthew Camacho said Gorton’s team won in the last minute.
    Bids/purchases over $1,000:  None.
Appointments/resignations:  Koehler was reelected as the board president, while John Frederick was reelected as the vice president.
    •  Pamela Rapoza was appointed as a teacher on special assignment and assistant to the elementary principal.  Rapoza will be the acting principal  in Laurie Hopkins-Halbert’s absence.
    •  Ring will take over as director of special education.
Upcoming meetings:  The next Dundee school board meeting is Wednesday, Aug. 8, at 7 p.m.
