Dundee school budget increases tax levy 3.3 percent

DUNDEE—Dundee Central School District residents had an opportunity to present their comments at a public hearing on the proposed 2009-10 district budget May 5. District business manager Melissa Lawson presented an overview of the proposed document prior to comments and questions from the public. The total proposed budget is $13,808,958, a percentage increase of 1.48 percent with the dollar change at $201,994. Tax levy is expected to increase 3.3 percent.  Voting on the budget and on a proposition to enter into a contract with the Dundee Library in the amount $41,906 will take place May 19 from noon until 8 p.m. in the public meeting room.
Lawson said, “I’m not going to say this budget was an easy budget. We still have a lot of unknowns. There have been sacrifices in positions, equipment, supplies, staff development and athletics.” Lawson said the biggest unknown is Federal Stimulus funds. She said, “We know the amount and are trying to understand the strings connected about how and when the funds can be used.” Lawson said more information is coming in every day.
The largest spending decreases in the budget were in curriculum and staff development, library and audiovisual and social services which totaled $107,000. The interscholastic athletics budget was decreased by 2.22 percent or $5,000. This decrease is due to Sectional cost containment strategies.
Lawson and district Superintendent of Schools Nancy Zimar fielded questions following Lawson’s presentation. Several related to whether items such as newsletters and health insurance are bid. Both are. Another question was on the cost per student. Lawson answered, “The fiscal summary does give that information, but it is old. Essentially it is there and Dundee compares to similar schools.” Extensive information is available on the district website.
