Dundee students promote community values

DUNDEE—The village put up 30 new banners that feature images created by Dundee Central School students, Friday, Sept. 14.
Students from all grade levels were able to submit designs that represented community values.  Dee Anderson, Our Town RoCKS and Reads coordinator, said 39 students, from kindergarten to grade 12, submitted original designs last school year.  She said elementary art teacher Todd Lamar and high school art teacher Nancy Streb encouraged students to create images in the spring while school was still in session.
Anderson said a team of judges consisting of school officials and some of the Our Town RoCKS beautification members selected 15 winning designs at the start of the summer.  She explained each design was made into two banners.  The community values reflected in the banners include love of reading, healthy lifestyles, honesty, responsibility, kindness, teamwork, and respect.  The student artists were also recognized at the Tuesday, Sept. 18, monthly meeting of Our Town RoCKS.
“We’ve been talking about this project becoming a reality for years,” said Dundee Superintendent Kathy Ring.  “They’re absolutely beautiful.”
The banners were hung on telephone poles along Main and Water Streets (between Five Star Bank and the school entrance).  The district is also displaying the banners along the driveway that loops around the school.  Anderson said the banners will be kept up until at least October.  She added they will be taken down to minimize weather damage.  Our Town RoCKS is also seeking businesses and organizations to display the banners throughout the community after that.  Anderson said the group would like to hang the banners on the telephone poles again at a later time.
