Fifth annual Green Grand Prix adds new event

WATKINS GLEN—The Green Grand Prix, set for Saturday, May 2, is a time-speed distance automotive rally covering more than 60 miles of the area’s scenic roadways.
This year, Green Grand Prix organizers are also adding a new dimension to the fifth annual celebration of sustainable transportation by partnering this year with the Earth Day Committee of the Schuyler County Environmental Management Council.
Green Grand Prix events bring together a diverse mix of vehicles and their owners, businesses promoting renewable energy and related products, environmental groups, students and faculty members from elementary to university level and the general public.
Earth Day activities and displays and those of the Green Grand Prix will be at the International Motor Racing Research Center, 610 S. Decatur St., Watkins Glen, and in the adjacent Watkins Glen Elementary School parking lot.
New this year: The Chicago-Soft Green Grand Prix Fuel Economy Run, presented by Race-cars.com. The Fuel Economy Run will offer its competitors the opportunity to set fuel economy records in various categories during a jaunt around the 80-mile perimeter of Seneca Lake.
Both road events are open to any licensed vehicle. Pre-registration online at www.greengrandprix.com is encouraged, though walk-ins may be accepted on event day if the fields are not full. The entry fee for either event is $50 for a private owner or $110 for a business entry.
The Earth Day Committee is offering an electronics recycling collection from noon to 3 p.m. on the south side of the adjacent Watkins Glen school district bus garage. Items such as TVs, VCRs, answering machines and CPUs will be accepted for small fees. Preregistration is not required.
Other Earth Day activities, including displays focusing on renewable energy and storm water, and the Green Grand Prix displays and vendors will be included in the Green Expo, which opens at 1 p.m. There is no admission charge.
Earth Day details are available by contacting Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schuyler County at 607-535-7161.
More about the Green Grand Prix is available from the Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce, the Geneva Area Chamber of Commerce or by calling 315-694-2812.
