MONTOUR FALLS--The Montour Falls Fire Department recently voted to contribute $85,000 from fund raising efforts to the village of Montour Falls to aid in the purchase of a 105-foot quint fire apparatus. The money will support the village's plan to purchase the fire vehicle without increasing the fire department's budget or raising property taxes, which includes portions of the town of Dix and the town of Montour.
"What we originally wanted to do was purchase the vehicle and not raise taxes," Fire Chief Jeff Confer said. "The fire department decided to contribute this amount of money to offset it. As far as the vehicle itself, is a 105-foot aerial device quint. It also has a pump on it so we are able to replace two trucks with one."
Confer said the total price of the truck will be $849,000. Confer said the new truck will be able to pump 1,000 gallons per minute and hold up to six firefighters. He said it will replace a 1977 Seagrave 100-foot aerial and a 1992 pumper currently in use by the department.
Confer said the department made their presentation to the village board, who made their decision subject to a referendum that expires Oct. 3. He said if all goes according to plan with the referendum, they are hoping to have the new truck from Pierce manufacturing by June 1 of next year.
"It can carry 1,000 feet of five-inch supply line," Confer said. "It will have all required ladders, pretty much it will have everything we need all on one truck."
Confer said it is a big project for the department, adding it will be a lease purchase for the vehicle. He said the department had a referendum earlier in the spring for the same vehicle where no one commented, but added the department was then able to find a cheaper way to acquire the truck, which required them to advertise it again.
