Five die in Benton accident, eight taken to hospitals

BENTON—Five people died in an accident involving a farm sprayer and two additional vehicles near the corner of Pre-Emption and Loree Roads, Tuesday, July 19.
The Yates County Sheriff's Department said the incident happened at 12:45 p.m.  Authorities added eight people were transported to area hospitals by ambulances and helicopters.  The sheriff's department said five helicopters responded to the scene.
A resident familiar with the accident (who wished to remain anonymous) said the farm sprayer was laying half in the road and half in the ditch.  Dundee Fire Chief Ray Miller confirmed a piece of farm equipment was involved in the accident.  He added that Schuyler Ambulance had been on stand-by in Dundee if needed.  The sheriff's office reported at least 10 ambulances assisted on the scene.
New York Police Sgt. Steve Neuberger said the Yates County Sheriff's Department was in charge of the accident.  However, he added a state trooper was on the scene.
