SUNSET, SOUTH CAROLINA--Freedom Village USA had planned to re-locate from their Lakemont, New York campus to a new location in South Carolina partnering with the not-for-profit group, Hannah Grace Homes. The new center was planned for Sunset, South Carolina which is a rural area in Pickens County.
However, Hannah Grace Homes announced Thursday, Aug. 8 their intent to not proceed with the Sunset campus. Their press release stated, "Due to the cost of opening being greater than expected and local concern for the partnership with Freedom Village USA, the board of directors determined that it was not in the best interest of the program and the community to open the new facility."
This decision came a week after a local meeting in Sunset, South Carolina was held that was attended by people opposed to the new campus.
The Hannah Grace Homes statement continued to say, "Pastor Fletcher Brothers of Freedom Village USA is retiring at the end of the month focusing his energies and efforts on his radio program Victory Today. He will continue to be an advocate for child-care facilities throughout the country through his radio program. All funds raised for the South Carolina campus will be donated to a state-licensed facility serving the needs of at-risk youth."
Pastor Brothers did not return a phone call from The Observer to get his comments about the South Carolina campus cancellation. Freedom Village USA recently listed for sale their 150 acres of real estate along Seneca Lake (in Lakemont) to allow the move to South Carolina. Previously, in March 2018, Freedom Village USA, the Lakemont facility for troubled youths operating under the name of Gates Community Chapel of Rochester, Inc. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the western district court of New York.
Fletcher A. Brothers is listed as president of the organization and the authorized representative of the debtor.
The largest unsecured claim listed by Freedom Village in the bankruptcy filing included alleged unpaid employee wages, interest and penalties totaling $1,523,834.19. The bankruptcy court documents also show Gates Community Chapel of Rochester, d/b/a Freedom Village, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 1990.
Hannah Grace Homes is associated with The National Center for Life and Liberty based in Largo, Florida.
