Get ready for a weekend of wrestling

WATKINS GLEN--Area wrestlers have been preparing all winter for the road to postseason success as the tournaments and competition get tougher. This year, the Watkins Glen Field House will host the Division II Section IV Wrestling Championships, Friday, Feb. 10 and Saturday, Feb. 11.
This tournament has traditionally been held at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton in years past. The wrestling championships at this level serve as the state qualifier for wrestlers to compete in Albany, Friday, Feb. 24 and Saturday, Feb. 25.
Last weekend, the Odessa-Montour wrestling team claimed the title for the Class D division in Section IV. The team had three individual champions in Jeremiah Lynch (160 pounds), Cameron Pickering (170) and Deshawn Johnson (182).
Watkins Glen finished sixth in the Class C division and had one individual champion with Kameryn Sheldon (220) getting a pin in 4:14.
The champions will be joined by other wrestlers who placed in the various classes and weight divisions. There will be 27 teams competing at Watkins Glen this weekend, including the O-M Indians and the Watkins Senecas.
Wrestling will get underway Friday, Feb. 10 at the field house with the preliminaries and the quarterfinals. Wrestling begins at 4 p.m.
Saturday will include wrestlebacks (consolation bracket matches-10 a.m.), semifinals (11 a.m.) and the championship finals (4:30 p.m.).
Ticket prices are $12 for all sessions both days, $8 for all day Saturday or $5 for one session only. Senior rates are $8, $5 and $3, respectfully.
See pages 8 and 9 in this edition for additional wrestling and sports results. The websites www.cnywrestling.com and www.nysphsaa.org/Sports/Wrestling have additional information on postseason wrestling events.
