Hammondsport receives national honor

HAMMONDSPORT—Glenn H. Curtiss Memorial Elementary HammondsportSchool in Hammonmdsport is one of 304 National Blue Ribbon Schools this year.
The U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced the recognitions, Thursday, Sept. 9.  All the schools (254 public and 50 private) will be honored at an awards ceremony, Nov. 15 and 16, in Washington D.C.
Superintendent Kyle Bower said this is the first year Hammondport was named a Blue Ribbon school.
“It’s the result of hard work over many years,” he said.  “Staff, parents, and the community are meeting the needs of students.”
Bower added Hammondsport was honored despite a decrease in enrollment over the last five years.  He explained this means teachers can give more individual attention to students.
