Hammondsport school board 06/17/09

Meeting: Hammondsport Central School Board of Education met Wednesday, June 17 for one hour and 50 minutes, plus a 50 minute executive session.
Attendance: The full board, plus school officials were present.  There were eight members of the public in the audience.
Action: Approved salary increases for non-union and management staff, ranging from 2.5 percent to 3.5 percent.
• Approved a $15 per hour fee for groups from outside the community using school facilities.
• Approved two contracts.  The first was with Clinical Associates (counseling services), $5,040 per year.  The second was for Angel Trax (digital camera system for buses), $21,000.
Discussion without action: Board member Richard Drain reported that income from the Taylor Scholarship fund will be about 40 percent last year’s, leading to smaller awards.
• Michelle Sincerbox and primary teachers reported that the school will transition into a practice of teaching only print penmanship in pre-kindergarten through first grade, introducing cursive writing in the second half of second grade.
• Superintendent Kyle Bower reported that federal funds including a stimulus grant will permit hiring a special education and/or reading teacher for two years.
• Bower pointed out that the cafeteria is currently running a shortfall of around $50,000 per year. which will probably lead to an increase in the price of meals.
• Bower reminded members that over 50 percent of school students are now eligible for free and reduced-price lunches.  As a result, the Steuben County Food Bank will offer free breakfasts and lunches at the school from July 6 through the end of the summer recreation period.  Cold meals will be available to any district residents under 18 years of age.  Summer school personnel and town summer recreation personnel are being trained to serve the meals.
Upcoming meetings:  The next regular board meeting is Wednesday, July 15 at 6:30 p.m.
