Hammondsport school board 12/15/10

Meeting: Hammondsport Central School Board of Education met Dec. 15, 2010 for an hour and 40 minutes, plus a 30-minute executive session.
Attendance: The full board, plus school officials and an audience of six attended.
Discussion without action: Superintendent Kyle Bower reported that the school’s broker is still in negotiation with the town of Urbana over sale of the Curtiss Memorial School. He hopes that negotiations will be complete in time for action at the January board meeting.
• Bower reported that 17.69 percent of Hammondsport students live in households with income below the federal poverty level, placing the community 37th of 49 districts in the Rochester area.
• Bower and secondary principal Tad Rounds reported that 64 percent of high school students are on athletic teams, and 54 percent of athletes are on the honor roll.
• Rounds reported that Steuben County Council for Addiction had conducted drug and alcohol education assemblies for grades 6-8 and 9-12. This followed a survey by Steuben County Mental Health indicating that students in the Hammondsport district were using drugs and alcohol at a rate above the county rate, and that the county rate was above the national rate.
