Hammondsport school installs more heated sidewalks

HAMMONDSPORT—With students out for the summer, the Hammondsport school on Main Street is putting in more heated sidewalks.
Kyle Bower, superintendent, said this work is the EXCEL project district residents voted on.  He also explained that the work will cost approximately $50,000.  It is also a continuation of the heated sidewalk put in at the main doors three years ago.  He explained the rest of the bus loop will now have the new sidewalk.
Bower added that because the EXCEL project bids came in under the projected amount, work is also being done at the elementary entrances.  The two doors will have handicapped accessible ramps put in and a canopy over the entrance near the flagpole.
Bower said the heated sidewalks should cut down on salt used during the winter, which in turn should do less damage to carpets inside.  He added the project also includes asbestos abatement in the Curtiss School, costing approximately $100,000, and a card-swiping system being put in at the Main Street school, costing approximately $175,000.  He said the work is expected to be done before the 2009-10 school year starts.
