Hector supports proposed scenic byway

HECTOR—The town of Hector gave its support for the Hector Lodi Scenic Byway, April 16, as part of the final nomination request to the Department of Transportation.
Chris Kimball-Peterson, director of Seneca Lake Byways Inc. (SLBI), said the over 250 page nomination package was sent to the DOT regions for Seneca and Schuyler County a few weeks ago.  From there, it will be examined and returned.  Kimball-Peterson said after the DOT, it is sent to the New York State Scenic Byways Advisory Board in Albany, which has has the final say.  She said by August or September the group hopes to hear an answer “one way or the other.”
The proposed scenic byway is an 18 mile stretch of Route 414 from just north of Watkins Glen to Lodi.  SLBI has been holding a series of meetings to get public input and information on the project.  Kimball-Peterson said the public has helped suggest ideas.  By the middle of January of 2009 SLBI was making the final edits.  She explained that scenic byways need to have themes.
The themes for the proposed Hector Lodi scenic byway are Seneca Lake, agriculture and the historical areas along the route.  Kimball-Peterson said the scenic byway would encourage people to visit the area by focusing on the wineries and historical points.  Better signs and focus would be put on locals events and businesses together with the area’s natural resources, like Hector Falls.
“In this economy people are looking at doing one or two day trips,” she said.
If the proposal is accepted then the scenic byway will also have access to funds to maintain it aesthetically, economically and for safety.
SLBI meets on the first and third Monday of each month at the Finger Lakes National Forest Headquarters and are open to the public.  For more information call Kimball-Peterson at 607-387-4990.
