Hotel expansion gets final approval

WATKINS GLEN—The Watkins Planning Board approved the final site plan for the Harbor Hotel's spa expansion after a public hearing, Wednesday, Aug. 19, allowing work to begin.
Norbert Hausner, architect of the project, said that work would not start for several months, at least "before the snows flies."  He explained their intention is to do work when it would have the least amount of impact on business for Captain Bill's and the Harbor Hotel.  He added that businesses in the Seneca Market Building will also continue to operate during construction.
"We've got to wait until it becomes a sleeping little town again," said Hausner.
At the meeting he also had an artist's rendering of what the project would like when the Harbor Hotel and the Seneca Market Building are combined.
The board also discussed the Schuyler County Planning Commission not making a decision on the hotel expansion, Aug. 13.  Gordon Wright said after speaking with Danielle Hautaniemi, he understood it to be because no representative from the hotel was present.  Hausner said he had been driving to the meeting when he got a flat tire.
The planning commission then asked for an extension to have a meeting with a representative to ask questions about drainage.  Wright said part of the drainage in question, at the parking lot and near the VFW building, is supposed to overflow like it does with exceptional rain.  The planning board denied the extension request.  Wright added that the planning commission not ruling, is just like if they had.
As Hausner left the meeting he told the board, "Got to get started.  Got to get started now."
