Humane society will relocate to Montour

MONTOUR FALLS—The owners of Kurtz Enterprise in Montour Falls have agreed to sell the building to the Humane Society of Schuyler County.
Georgie Taylor, humane society president, said the cost is $275,000. She said the purchase should close in mid-June and that is when the society will start to do renovations to the building. It will serve as the county’s animal shelter and spay-neuter clinic. Taylor added the humane society hopes to have the renovations done by the end of this year.
Taylor said the new facility will house 24 dogs and 34 cats, operate as the adoption center, and also have an education/meeting room. She explained the Kurtz Enterprise building was chosen as the location over the spay-neuter site in Alpine, which would have cost more to renovate. The town of Catharine board had several stipulations about the proposed facility in Alpine. She added the Kurtz Enterprise site is more centrally located within the county.
Taylor said renovations to the Kurtz Enterprise building should cost around $350,000; the final design is still being modified. She said the humane society will start a campaign to raise that money. The Alpine location will also be sold to cover the costs. Taylor explained they have the funds necessary to make the purchase now. Renovations will include a new heating system, offices, surgery space and the kennels. She said the kennels will cost the most. They are designed so the dogs don’t see each other and will therefore not bark at each other.
Taylor previously explained the humane society needed to expand its facilities if it were to run Schuyler County’s animal shelter. The humane society took over the dog shelter Aug. 1 of 2009. Taylor explained the facility was too small for continued use.
