Jazz concert will feature former Odessa teacher

ODESSA—The Odessa-Montour school district is holding a special concert called Fall into Jazz that will feature a local educator and nationally known jazz clarinetist.
The concert is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. It will be held in the Brown-Fetter Auditorium, partially named after the featured performer, Dr. Frank Brown. Brown used to be a teacher at Odessa-Montour from 1955 and 1981, but now serves as a substitute teacher.
Clarice Miles, vocal music and instrumental teacher, explained Brown still performs locally in Hammondsport. She added he is an “awesome clarinetist.” She also said Brown has performed with David Brubeck, a jazz pianist and composer, as well as Chris Brubeck and Joel Brown. Miles said Brown used to go to Florida and play with other bands there during the winter.
Brown holds both B.S. and M.S. degrees from Ithaca College. He earned an Ed.D. from the University of Illinois. His 50-year career includes positions as band director and instrumental music educator at all levels in the public schools of New York State and Florida. Other teaching experiences include positions at Elmira College, Tallahassee Community College, and the Florida State University School. Brown has performed in symphony orchestras, concert and jazz bands in noted venues such as Tanglewood and Krannert Center. Most recently he performed with soprano Dawn Upshaw at Carnegie Hall.
One of the other musicians will be high school Principal Greg Conlon as a jazz vocalist. Miles said Conlon has performed in New York City. The Josh Condon Trio will also perform that evening. They are an Ithaca College jazz combo.
Tickets for the concert are $5. For more, call 607-594-3341 Ext. 3955.
