Leszyk will become Watkins Glen mayor

SCHUYLER COUNTY--Elections were held in Schuyler County, Tuesday, March 19 featuring mayoral races in both Watkins Glen and Odessa.
Political newcomer Luke Leszyk topped Trustee Laurie DeNardo for the Watkins Glen mayor position, 330-269. There were also two trustee positions available with three candidates running. Louis Perazzini and Nancy Woodworth were elected with 360 and 333 votes, respectively. Brian Eslinger had 309 votes.
Watkins Glen Police Department Sgt. in Charge Steven Decker ran for the village justice post unopposed. He had 448 votes.
A measure to implement a proposed service award program for the fire department also passed 414-156. The program allows firefighters a $500 credit per year for attending drills, responding to calls, completing training courses, attending company meetings, etc. After five years, the firefighter is "vested" and at the age of 60 can be paid for time served.
In Odessa, Gerry Messmer was elected mayor. Aubrey Tomassi and Anne Centurelli topped the vote total for the two trustee positions.
