PENN YAN--The Penn Yan School Board reviewed the proposed capital project improvements during their meeting Wednesday, Aug. 20, identifying the middle school roof as the highest priority project. Gian-Paul Piane of SEI Design Group gave the board a presentation in which he outlined several of the projects the district wished to address.
"The middle school roof is the highest priority piece," Piane said. "You have limped it along for quite awhile."
Piane added the roof is "not in good shape" and should not be put off any longer. He also said while it has its weak points, it is also not at a point where the school needs to declare an emergency project to get it repaired, instead listing it as one of the more important capital project items, along with items like flooring at the elementary school and ventilation issues at the academy. Piane said the mechanical units on top of the middle school are not in good shape, allowing for the ingress of water, adding the skylight above the main entrance should also be replaced during the project.
Piane said if the target date for a referendum vote is the middle of December, the district would have to have an October declaration, giving the public a 45 day period for comment on the project.
