Montour Pharmacy wants drive-through

MONTOUR FALLS—The Montour Pharmacy wants to compete in business by installing a drive-through.
The Montour Falls village board heard about the plan from project contractor Gary Herzig. In order to complete the drive-through, Herzig is looking for the village to sell or lease an approximately 15 wide space from the parking lot behind the pharmacy, located on Main Street next to Jerlando’s. The village board was favorable to the plan, especially if the pharmacy would not tear down the next door building to fulfill the plan.
Herzig explained the then code enforcement officer suggested to him several years ago to buy and tear down the neighboring building to put in a drive-through. However, he added the building was not for sale, and tearing down a building is expensive.
He said the drive-through idea was dropped until more recently. The plan is now to use some of the parking lot space to create a window which people can drive up to.
Herzig added other competing pharmacies in the area don’t have drive-throughs. Montour Pharmacy is one of the nine pharmacies owned by Henderson’s Drug Store.
He said that according to studies, having a drive-through would actually increase sales 10 to 20 percent. Herzig added this includes sales inside the pharmacy. He said even with a drive-through people would still be likely to stop inside to make an order for pick up later.
