Mustangs beat Geneva 20-12

GENEVA--The Penn Yan varsity football team defeated the Geneva Panthers Saturday night, Sept. 27 in an away game. With the 20-12 victory, the Mustangs move to 2-2 on the season.
The Panthers scored first to go up 6-0 in the first quarter of play. The Mustangs defense drove the Panthers back to their own goal line but were unable to pick up a safety or blocked punt in the second quarter.
After a Tanner Irwin pass to senior tight end Tyler Bray to convert on fourth down, the Mustangs scored their first touchdown on a short rush by running back Casey Marsh. After a missed extra point attempt, the score was tied 6-6 with two minutes left in the half. Geneva would be sacked on two consecutive plays to make it third and 28 with 15 seconds left in the half. The half ended after a short rush by the Panthers.
The Mustangs received the ball to start the third quarter, beginning the drive at their 11 yard line. The offensive rushing attack drove the ball down for a touchdown run and two-point conversion to go ahead 14-6. The Mustang defense recovered a fumble the following series at the Geneva 31 yard line, however a fourth down interception gave the Panthers the ball back on their own 25. After being forced to punt, they downed the ball at Penn Yan's one yard line. The Mustangs were also forced to punt after making little progress.
Geneva drove down the field the next series, completing a touchdown pass. The Penn Yan defense held on the two-point conversion attempt to retain a 14-12 lead with some five minutes left in the game.
A Ben Covert interception and a Bray fumble recovery on Geneva's following offensive series sealed the Mustangs victory at 20-12. This was the first Mustangs victory in the last 11 games against Geneva.
"Our coaches did a great job with the game plan and our kids came out and executed," Head Coach Dave Fauth said. "It was perfect. It was exactly what we drew up. We were very aggressive and we took it to them. We made the plays when we needed to. We played a heck of a game. I am so proud of those kids."
The next Penn Yan football game is Friday, Oct. 3 at home against East Rochester at 7:15 p.m.
