Mustangs capture sectional title

ROCHESTER-The Penn Yan boys varsity lacrosse team won their seventh consecutive and 22nd total sectional title, Wednesday, May 31 at St. John Fisher College. This was the Mustangs first title in Class D, a new division formed in 2017.
The second seeded Penn Yan boys improved to 10-9 on the season with the Wednesday victory over Waterloo. Penn Yan dominated in the game and won 13-6.
Austin Blumbergs scored five goals and had two assists. Class D All Tournament Most Valuable Player Conner Fingar recorded three goals and also had two assists. Ben Emerson contributed a pair of goals and assists, while Dylan Stape, Brandon Smith and Will Rogers each had one goal.
In the cage, Jeff Kinyoun had two saves and Kyle Welker one.
In addition to Fingar, Emerson, Stape, Blumbergs, Coty Bailey and Dakota Miller were also named to the All Tournament Team.
Penn Yan now moves on to the first round of states. Their opponent will be determined Thursday, June 1 after the Section VI champion (Akron Tigers (16-1) vs. Eden Raiders (14-3)) is crowned.
