Mustangs lose in close homecoming contest

PENN YAN--The Penn Yan varsity football team lost a close contest 26-22 to the Waterloo Indians in their homecoming game Saturday, Sept. 13. Faith Colaneri was selected as the 2014 homecoming queen during the day's events.
Junior quarterback Tanner Irwin and senior wide receiver Ben Covert were the first to put points on the board with a touchdown pass in the first quarter. A blocked extra point would put the Mustangs up 6-0, but the Indians would respond with a second quarter touchdown to tie the score at 6-6 going into halftime.
During halftime, Faith Colaneri was crowned the 2014 homecoming queen by last year's queen Madison Arnold. Colaneri was escorted by Michael Peacock and was selected from a group that included Jessie Decker, Micheala Densmore, Natalie McFarland and Cassandra Sherman.
The scoring opened up in the second half as the Mustangs marched down to score on their first offensive drive to put the score at 14-6 after a successful two-point conversion. The offensive drive was highlighted by Irwin's rushing attack, picking up both the touchdown and conversion.
The Indians responded with a score of their own on a fourth quarter touchdown pass to tie the game at 14-14. Penn Yan added another Irwin rushing touchdown and two-point conversion to go up 22-14, but Waterloo would run back the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown. Upon failing the conversion attempt, Penn Yan still led 22-14.
Waterloo intercepted a screen pass to set up the go-ahead touchdown to put the score at 26-22 after another failed two-point conversion. Penn Yan attempted to drive down the field to score with two minutes left on the clock, but another interception ended the drive. Waterloo would pick up a first down and kneel the ball to end the game 26-22 Waterloo.
"We didn't make plays," Head Coach David Fauth said. "That's all it comes down to. We take a step forward and two steps back every single time. We got to cut the mistakes, mental mistakes. When you get done telling them not to do something and they do it, they're not using their head. We have got to clean that up."
