Mustangs roll to 4-0 on the season

PENN YAN--The Penn Yan varsity football team continued their win streak Friday, Sept. 25 in an away game against the Waterloo Indians. The final score was 42-12.
The Mustangs kicked off to start the game, forcing a punt. A pass interference penalty on Waterloo during the Mustang's ensuing offensive drive set the Mustangs up on the Indians' 25-yard line. A fumbled snap put Penn Yan back to the 34, which was followed by an 11-yard sack. The Mustangs could not convert on third and 30 and were forced to punt.
The Penn Yan defense gave up a 35-yard rush to let the Indians offense into Mustang territory. After allowing one fourth down conversion, the Mustangs held on their second fourth down conversion attempt, turning the ball over after a 12-play drive. The first quarter was scoreless after a defensive struggle.
The Mustangs' next offensive drive broke the tie on a five-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tanner Irwin to wide receiver Sean Stape. After a failed two-point conversion, the score was 6-0 early in the second quarter after Penn Yan's 10 play, 75-yard drive.
The Mustang defense forced another punt after the Indians offense went three and out. Penn Yan's offense started on their own 20-yard line, but had to punt out of their own end zone. Waterloo tied the ball game at 6-6 on their next drive after a 22-yard touchdown pass.
The Mustangs responded on their next offensive series, as Irwin set up a touchdown with a 44-yard pass to running back Austin Fingar. The team scored on a one-yard rush two plays later by fullback Nick Irwin. The score was 12-6 Penn Yan after another failed two-point conversion.
Waterloo came out throwing the ball again on the next offensive series, but Tanner Irwin ended their drive with an interception at the Penn Yan 22-yard line with 1:24 left in the half. Tanner Irwin connected with Fingar again for a 45-yard touchdown pass to go up 20-6 after a successful two-point conversion.
The Mustangs received the opening kickoff of the second half, scoring on another Tanner Irwin to Fingar touchdown pass to go up 26-6. Waterloo responded with a 34-yard rushing touchdown with 7:28 left in the quarter. After a failed two-point conversion, the Mustang lead was trimmed to 26-12.
Dylan Stape set up the next Penn Yan score with a 42-yard rush, with the touchdown coming on a three-yard touchdown rush to go up 34-12.
The Mustangs scored again in the fourth quarter on a Tanner Irwin rushing touchdown to go up 42-12. Fingar would get a second interception on the night with a little over 7 minutes left in the game to give the Mustangs the ball once more. The Mustangs would run out the clock to put the final score at 42-12.
