PITTSFORD—The Penn Yan Mustangs won the Section 5 lacrosse championship Tuesday, May 31, defeating the Bath Haverling Rams, 12-6. The title game started out with a mostly defensive battle - and then Penn Yan found the nets. With some unanswered goals, the Mustangs pulled away to an 8-3 halftime lead. The third quarter was delayed due to the hot, muggy field conditions at St. John Fisher College. Section 5 procedures require a game to be delayed if the playing conditions are 96 degrees or above. After a 20 minute heat delay, Penn Yan continued their offensive attack and took a commanding 11-5 lead by the end of the third quarter. Bath and Penn Yan each added another goal to make the final score 12-6. Scoring for Penn Yan included: R. Davison: 4 goals, J.J. Voigt: 3, D. Yonts: 3, A. Luppino: 1 and A. Stork: 1 With the win, the Penn Yan season record goes to 16-3 and the Mustangs now advance in the state tournament and will play again this Saturday, June 4, against the Class C Buffalo region winner.
