Mustangs win fourth straight contest

NEWARK--The Penn Yan varsity football team defeated the Newark Reds 19-6 in an away game Friday, Oct. 10. The Mustangs record goes to 4-2 on the season.
The Reds had the first offensive possession of the game, but turned the ball over on downs, giving the Mustangs the ball on their 24-yard line. The Mustangs were forced to punt as well on their opening drive. The first quarter ended without either team scoring.
The first score of the game came late in the second quarter from senior running back Casey Marsh to take a 7-0 lead into the half. The score came on a one-yard rush.
Penn Yan received the ball to start the second half, scoring on a senior wideout Josh Brewster 25-yard touchdown reception from junior running back Austin Fingar after junior quarterback Tanner Irwin pitched it out to him. The extra point was blocked to give Penn Yan a 13-0 lead.
After Newark was forced to punt, the Mustangs mounted a more than 80 yard drive capped off by Marsh reeling in a 13-yard touchdown reception from Irwin. After the failed conversion attempt, Penn Yan led 19-0.
Newark responded with a 50-yard rushing touchdown on their next offensive series to draw the score to 19-6 Penn Yan. Newark took the ball back over on downs with 4:24 left in the game. Senior defensive back Eric Riehl almost had an interception, but the ball was taken from his hands and taken to Penn Yan's 43-yard line. However, the Reds were unable to score, ending the game with Penn Yan's fourth victory in a row.
The Mustangs play their final game of the regular season at home against Wayne Saturday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
