COLUMBIA, MO.—The National Newspaper Association announced the recipients of the 2013 Better Newspaper Contest award winners on Friday, July 19.
The Observer’s full-color photo essay (which also ran in the REVIEW&EXPRESS) from last year’s Watkins Glen NASCAR weekend, “Ambrose two-time winner at The Glen,” took second-place honors in the under 3,000 circulation division. Brandon Lawson is the photographer who produced the award-winning images for the photo essay. The full-page included the photos of NASCAR drivers, cars and fans along with images from victory lane. The judges’ comments for The Observer page included, “Great faces and variety in images.”
NNA Awards Committee Chairperson said, “The winners reflect the high quality of publications represented by the association.”
There were a total of 1,777 entries in the 2013 Better Newspaper Contest with member newspapers in 41 states named as winners in this year’s competition.
California had the most combined BNC/BNAC wins with 88, followed by Texas with 45 and Iowa and Wyoming tied with 41 each.
Lists of winners by division and newspaper are available on the contest’s web page at nnaweb.org.
Judging was performed primarily by active community newspaper editors and publishers and included retired university journalism professors and retired or former newspaper men and women.
Winners will be recognized at the NNA award reception scheduled for Sept. 14, during NNA’s 127th Annual Convention & Trade Show at the Arizona Grand Resort in Phoenix, Ariz.
