Hammondsport graduates start a business
HAMMONDSPORT—Three former Hammondsport high school graduates are operating a business in the village, all while in the middle of college.  Gavin Goodman, Will Bailey, and Ric Wendlandt started BWG Airchairs, to sell “airchairs.”  The products are a variety of padded chairs and benches that hang from an above source.  Goodman said the manufacturer of the airchairs is a friend of his parents.  He added that for the last couple of years he had sold airchairs for the manufacturer at events like music festivals.  Goodman explained he was offered the chance to sell them himself.  So with Bailey and Wendlandt, the company was formed this summer.  BWG Airchairs currently operates out of the greenhouse on the corner of Shether and Main Streets.  Goodman said that Monday through Friday, Baily will operate the store, while taking a year off college.  Goodman and Wendlandt will also come back from college alternating weekends and staff the store.  He added the greenhouse works as a good space because the airchair is a visual product.

HAMMONDSPORT—Ted Finlayson-Schueler of SAFETY First reiterated his evaluation to the Hammondsport school board, reported in writing last month, that bus routes in the district are safe as currently used.  He allowed that the setting is challenging, saying, “I’m not sure I’ve ever been in a district, at least in this state, with this number of steep roads.”  He based his evaluation on the slope, condition, surface, and width of each road, along with the buses, which he said had been “specced out” for this environment” with good gearing for the grades. Read More ...

Curtiss museum looks to recreate history
PENN YAN—After years of being on the “back burner,” the Albany Flyer is now the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum’s main project.  The reproduction of the 1910 plane is currently being worked on at the Penn Yan airport. Pilot Jim Poel said workers are getting it ready for flight. He explained that the restoration staff crew are getting the wheels back on and making sure it is “rigged up and taut.”  The plane was moved up to Penn Yan two weeks ago for the work. Poel said work started in 2004 on the Albany Flyer, but it was a side project to the America seaplane. He added the plane has a Curtiss engine in it, estimated to be from 1918.  The museum hopes to duplicate the flight that made the original plane famous.  Poel explained the Flyer was the first to fly between two major cities: Albany and New York. According to the Curtiss Museum, the 150 mile public flight was the first true cross-country flight. It was also the longest flight attempted at the time. Read More ...
