Trustee questions process, spending DRESDEN—Dresden village board’s newest trustee, Tom McGuigan, had concerns with several bills given to the board to approve, at the Wednesday, Aug. 4 meeting. McGuigan said the bills were $1,127 for road signs, $968 for disposal (of batteries, light bulbs, and solvents), gas mileage from two trips equaling over $700, and $505 for a tree removal. He said one problem he has is not pre-approving such expenditures. Trustee David Wernsing said that, at least with the tree, it was a matter of public safety, and that Mayor Loujane Johns knew about it. Johns added she had a concern about the road signs bill. She said Superintendent of Public Works John Stryker sent a list of the signs needed and asked for quotes only. However, Johns explained a box containing the signs arrived, with a bill for the village. The invoice itself, back from the supplier has “quotes only” still written on it. Read More ...

Dresden village board 6/2/10 DRESDEN—The Dresden village board decided to table decision on accepting a bid for the fire department vehicle exhaust system. The village received three bids that were opened. Two of the bids were Smoke Blotter for $24,700 and Clean Air Concepts for $29,601. During the opening of the bids, the third price was not readily available, and the board decided to get input from the fire department. The board also decided to enter in a third party custodian agreement with Lyons National Bank. Mayor Loujane Johns explained it is a non-binding agreement where the village will also consider Lyons National Bank when looking into checking accounts. Clerk Terry Dilts added the village has already used Lyons before, and gotten the lowest interest rates from them. Read More ...

Wood burning plant battles weather DRESDEN—The biomass burning equipment at AES Greenidge in Dresden has been tested by the weather as the company works its way up to 100 percent optimization. Plant Manager Doug Roll said since the plant started operating in early August, the equipment has been tested by the weather. He explained that during the winter, several areas of the machinery froze. Roll explained that while they know how to deal with the problems now, at the time equipment like the metering bins froze and it was hard to create friction. “Once (the wood) processed and fed into the boiler, it was fine,” said Roll. The warmer weather has also provided its own problems. Roll said it has been hard to get new wood in without it being wet. However, he added they have built up an inventory. The last part of the project to be completed, after biomass burning started Aug. 1, 2009, was the storage barn for wood. That is also the first stage of machinery the wood goes through to be processed. Read More ...
