Residents discuss drainage concerns MONTOUR FALLS—A number of residents spoke to the Montour Falls village board about water drainage complaints and concerns, at the Monday, Aug. 16 meeting. Three Turner Park road residents were present to talk about drainage concerns. They wanted an update on the drainage project. The board has previously talked about how to control water drainage down the looped road off of College Avenue. Mayor Donna Kelley said the plan at this point includes installing storm drains for sure. Residents have an issue of water flowing off of properties and onto neighbor’s properties, and down the road. Kelley added that curbing is currently being taken out because no matter what the end plan is, curbing has to come out. She explained putting curbing back in areas where it is taken out is still up for debate due to the cost. Kelley said the plan is to do storm drains this year, and paving the streets next year. Montour wants changes to new zoning MONTOUR FALLS—The Montour Falls village board approved, Tuesday, July 6, sending zoning law amendments to the village attorney, Robert Halpin. Mayor Donna Kelley said since the law is new, effective Jan. 1 of this year, there will bound to be changes needed. A public hearing is scheduled at the Monday, Aug. 16 meeting for whatever changes Halpin can have written up. Those changes will include a number of amendments Halpin himself found, including spelling mistakes and clarifications. During public comment, the board heard from resident Jody Saunders about another change that may be covered in the public hearing. Saunders and her family were asking if something could be done to the zoning code concerning swimming pools. She explained that the family wants to install a pool, but not where the code says she has to place it. Saunders explained according to the code, it would have to be in the middle of the backyard to account for setbacks from other buildings. Read More ...

Montour group promotes village MONTOUR FALLS—The Montour Falls Improvement Association is looking to promote both Montour Falls and its historical places of interest. Members of MFIA and some of the public met Wednesday, June 23, to discuss what projects the group has engineered. Group President Phil Gillemot explained that over the last five years MFIA has worked on a number of projects to attract people to Montour Falls using the village’s many historical buildings. One of the most recent ways MFIA is trying to get more people aware of the Glorious T, the central hub of those buildings, is to spread the word about the self-guided walking tour and cell phone tour. Brochures for both are available, but will be more accessible in holders out around the Main/Genesee Street intersection. Gillemot said the cell phone tour has been available since August of last year, but usage of it has been limited. Read More ...

The Montour Falls village board said it had no problem with the extra work, at the Monday, June 21 board meeting. The Department of Transportation is in charge of the project, with CP Ward Inc. contracted to do the work. The village was asked if there were noise restrictions that might limit working into the evenings. Montour board members agreed the workers should be able to work a second shift, baring any code restrictions. Mayor Donna Kelley said the village could give the workers a variance if there was a restriction. Trustee Phil Smith said if it meant completing the bridge sooner, it’s a good idea. Read More ...
