Odessa Tea Party questions Richter, Marcellus ODESSA—The Odessa Tea Party hosted two more candidates, George Richter and Paul Marcellus, Wednesday, Aug. 18.Both Richter and Marcellus are two of the republican candidates running for the 137th state assembly district. About 30 people were in attendance for the meeting. Each candidate was given time for an introduction, and then answered questions. When asked about term limits, Richter said he agreed absolutely. He said it seems to work fine for elected positions like state governor. Marcellus said that with two-year terms, people get to vote on assembly members often. He added that if a representative was doing a good job, he’d think people would want that person to stay elected. However, Marcellus said that positions like assembly leader should have limits. Both agreed in supporting people’s rights to bear arms. Marcellus added he believes licensing is needed. Richter said that the permitting process is too long. Read More ...

Odessa-Montour school board 8/12/10 ODESSA— Business Manager Greg Dale spoke to the Odessa-Montour school board about the state passing its budget and the federal government approving emergency funds to schools. However, he said he only had estimated or unofficial numbers at this point. Dale said for state funds, the unofficial numbers looked like state aid will be close to the five percent cut Gov. David Paterson proposed. This is what the district based its own budget on. When it came to the federal money approved to save teaching positions, Dale said there are too many unknowns. He said Odessa should get $200,000 for one year only. Dale explained there has been no word when the funds will arrive, what the rules are, and if it will go through the state to be distributed. Odessa Fire Department celebrates 100 years ODESSA—The community was invited to celebrate the Odessa Fire Department’s 100th anniversary, Saturday, July 10. An open house was held, with old and new equipment, photos, archives, and videos on display. Deputy Chief John D. Jelliff said in 1905 the community purchased a hand pumper and hose cart, which was also at the event. Jelliff explained from 1905 to 1910, the Odessa community depended on volunteers to respond to fires using the pumper. However, he said that just wasn’t working, so in 1910, the Odessa Fire Department was Incorporated. That was what the anniversary was celebrating. Jelliff said in 1911 the fire department started operating out of the Odessa Opera House, down the road from where the department currently is. Read More ...

Odessa-Montour school board 6/10/10 ODESSA—The Odessa-Montour school board approved extending Frame’s contract by one additional year, to June 30, 2015. Board members Scott Westervelt, Don Roberts, and Matt Walters voted against it, only because the three wanted to review the superintendent’s contract before voting.
